Irene Brown is an artist who lives and works in Newcastle upon Tyne, where she is currently Degree Programme Director of the Master of Fine Art programme at Newcastle University.

Much of her work is concerned with site-specific projects both in the public realm through large-scale permanently sited public sculpture and as temporary gallery based installations. Many projects employ optical illusions and kinetics to explore visual perception.

Current research and practice is focused on wonder and visual display, investigating the threshold between aesthetic and scientific realms.  Irene is the instigator and curator of The Gallery of Wonder a conference point and exhibition facility for research into the evocation of wonder. Influences are many and eclectic but centre strongly on cabinets of curiosities, museums and her own, extensive collection of artefacts.

Irene created the wonder filled Oculus Mundi for the Philosophers’ Table exhibition.
